Utility Pipe Layer

As a Utility Pipe Layer, you’ll play a key role in upgrading Atlanta’s underground infrastructure. C.W. Matthews pipe crews install fire hydrants, gate valves, water mains, and general water services. We also lower or raise existing manholes to match the grade. From within the ditch, you’ll ensure pipes are laid precisely, maintain grade accuracy for our operators, and seamlessly connect each pipe to its neighbor.

Pipe Installation

  • Work in the ditch to install pipes according to project specifications.
  • Know and practice proper trench safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with equipment operators to maneuver pipes into place.

Pipe Preparation

  • Clean pipe bells and ensure they’re free from debris and obstructions.
  • Apply lubricant as needed to facilitate smooth connections and prevent friction.
  • Use tools like lasers and levels to monitor pipe alignment and grade.

Guidance and Belling

  • Guide pipes into the ditch as equipment operators lower them down.
  • Properly bell the pipes for secure, watertight connection.
  • Position pipes and seal joints for a lasting result.
