The I-85 Express Lanes Extension is C.W. Matthews Contracting Company’s latest design-build large highway infrastructure project, and is scheduled to be opened to the public in the fall of 2018. The new variably priced express lanes will extend the existing express lanes from Old Peachtree Road to Hamilton Mill Road in Gwinnett County for a distance of approximately 10 miles, and provide congestion relief for the 263,000 vehicles traveling the corridor each day.
The project scope involves the addition of newly constructed toll lanes in the northbound and southbound direction, collector-distributor auxiliary lanes between on- and off-ramps to prevent bottlenecks, three new bridges, additional general purpose travel lanes from I-985 to Hamilton Mill Road, 21 retaining walls, and 29,000 LF of drainage piping. In addition to the new construction, the existing general purpose travel-way will receive resurfacing with new asphalt paving for the entire length of the project, bringing the total asphalt tonnage for the project to 290,000 tons.
