Project Details

In May 2021 we received the go ahead to break ground on the Cartersville Airport Runway profile correction, EMAS pad installation & all new lighting and signage contract. This job required a 21-day shutdown period of the runway to accomplish all major improvements. As required per contract, our crews were responsible for correcting the profile & cross slope of the runway to better facilitate drainage along the length of the project. During that 21-day shut down period our crew laid down over 31,000 tons of asphalt, moved 15,000 cubic yards of dirt & milled over 94,000 square yards of existing asphalt.

The teamwork between milling & survey allowed our milling crews to turn 4 projected shifts worth of milling into mere 15 hours of non-stop work by utilizing Topcon millimeter GPS technology to create a profile of the runway to address high/low areas of concern. This project provided an opportunity to showcase the best in class inter-divisional project management C.W.Matthews has to offer. The communication and planning between roadway and asphalt allowed our teams to quickly address subgrade failures as they happened which ultimately prevented any additional time delays. While this project was not without its hick-ups, the work our crews put in ultimately superseded those moments and allowed us to finish on time.
