Project Details

Polk County Airport (4A4), officially known as Cornelius Moore Field, has been a cornerstone of Cedartown's infrastructure since its establishment in 1963. Spanning 210 acres, the airport serves as a crucial gateway for pilots. Located approximately five miles east of Cedartown and five miles west of Rockmart, it offers a 5,060-foot asphalt runway (Runway 10-28) and supports various aviation activities, including flight training, recreational flying, and emergency medical services. In September 2024, U.S. Senators Reverend Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff announced the allocation of federal funds to the Polk County Airport. This grant, part of a broader investment in Georgia's airports, was awarded through the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP), made possible by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. The funding is earmarked for significant upgrades to the airport's runway system, enhancing safety and operational efficiency via a line of sight correction project.

In June 2024, C.W. Matthews Contracting Co. was awarded the construction contract for the line-of-sight correction along Runway 10-28 at Polk County Airport, along with the demolition and realignment of two existing taxiways. This comprehensive infrastructure project encompasses the milling of approximately 43,000 square yards of asphalt, the excavation and relocation of over 85,000 cubic yards of earth, the placement of nearly 11,000 tons of new asphalt, and significant upgrades to the airport's drainage and airfield lighting systems. Phase 1 of construction commenced on May 12, 2025. During this initial phase, CWM will implement erosion and sediment control measures to protect the surrounding environment and enhance stormwater management capabilities. This phase also includes asphalt milling and removal of existing lighting systems to facilitate mass grading operations. These foundational tasks will set the stage for paving operations anticipated to begin in late fall 2025. Phase 2 will focus on finalizing the project with the installation of new airfield lighting and pavement markings on the runway and taxiways. These enhancements will improve visibility and safety for all airport users.

Upon completion, the improvements at Polk County Airport are expected to significantly contribute to the local economy by attracting aviation-related businesses and increasing operational capacity. In addition to fostering job creation, the upgrades will ensure compliance with modern FAA safety standards and improve the overall functionality of the airfield.

This project reflects the continued dedication and expertise of C.W. Matthews crews in supporting Georgia’s critical transportation infrastructure and promoting economic development across the state.
