The SR 54 Widening and Reconstruction Project is located in Clayton and Fayette counties, between Jonesboro and Fayetteville. The main purpose of the project is to reconstruct and widen over five miles of SR 54 along with widening three existing bridges. By completing this project, SR 54, a vital corridor in South Metro Atlanta, will be transformed from a simple two-lane highway to a four-lane divided highway complete with medians and sidewalks.
Vast amounts of utilities presented considerable challenges on this project. Both underground and overhead utilities had to be relocated while crews were moving over 350,000 cubic yards of material and installing almost 35,000 feet of storm drain pipe in various sizes, all while maintaining traffic throughout the project.
